If your home has vinyl siding that you either don't know or can't remember when it was installed, you may be wondering if the time has come to get new siding. If so, look for the following signs that your old vinyl siding needs replacing.

Seams Are Coming Apart

One sign that your old siding has seen better days is when the seams start coming apart. When the siding was first installed, these seams were tight, allowing them to keep the panels together and protect the underlying structures from moisture.

However, as the siding ages and is exposed to wind, these seams start prying open. Once there are gaps in the seams, rainwater can leak underneath, where it can damage the wood and even cause mold to grow.

Also, during any windstorm, there is a chance a strong gust will catch one of the panels. The panel may then either be blown off completely or bent. If one becomes bent, there is no way to straighten it, meaning it will have to be replaced.

Siding Becomes Brittle

Another indicator that it is time to replace your old vinyl siding is when it becomes brittle. After years of exposure to the direct rays of the sun, any moisture in the siding is evaporated, leaving it dry.

Also, after being exposed to extremes in temperatures, the constant expansion and contraction of the vinyl will weaken the material. Eventually, the combination of the sun's rays, heat, and cold can make the siding become brittle.

Once the vinyl is brittle, every impact increases the chances of it cracking. Even a rock thrown by your lawn mower could create a hole large enough to allow water to pour underneath the siding.

If you do not see any brittleness on your siding, you can test it by finding an inconspicuous area. Then, gently push on the corner of one of the panels. If you start to hear it cracking, or you can see a small split appear, your siding is pretty brittle. Consider replacing it before any damage occurs to prevent rotting and molding of the structures of your home underneath.

If your home's vinyl siding is showing the above signs of damage, age, and wear and tear, it may be time to replace it. Contact a contractor like Custom Siding & Window Solution who provides vinyl siding services to have them assess the siding's condition and discuss the available options with you.
